We had so much fun cheering on the Patriots today. We made fun crafts, read a great nonfiction book about the Patriots and voted on who will win the Super Bowl this Sunday! Such great spirit in room 6!
Yesterday we learned all about the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania. He likes to eat green leaves, fruits and vegetables. He loves to whistle and he has a friend named George! We got to make predictions about whether he would see his shadow today and we even practiced making his shadow in our classroom! We got unlucky, Phil saw his shadow. 6 more weeks of winter!! Stay warm!
We had so much fun with KidStock thanks to our PTO. We are all excellent actors and actresses! How talented is our 1st grade?!
We have begun a unit in math on measurements. Using 12-inch string, paper clips, inch tiles, and cubes we are practicing measuring different objects in our rooms. We are also able to compare 2 objects to see which is longer or shorter!
Grinch Day in 1st grade was lots of fun! We read the story "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and also got to watch the cartoon! We made crafts and talked about what can sometimes make us grumpy. We also shared with others how we make ourselves happy when we are grumpy! We all came up with different ways to make the grinch grin. Happy Grinch Day to you!
In social studies, Ms. Dulong's friend Globe Trot Scott has been delivering activities and messages to us to help us learn about different holidays and traditions that are celebrated during this time of the year all around the world! So far we have learned about Italy, Mexico, China and Israel. In Italy, children usually write secret notes to their parents promising to be good in the new year and hide them in napkins. In Mexico, families usually decorate their homes with poinsettia flowers and they celebrate Las Posadas with piñatas! In China, families celebrate the Chinese New Year. Some dress up in dragon costumes and dance around. In Israel, families celebrate Hanukkah playing with dreidels and lighting up menorahs! Where will we be off to next?
We love choice time! We can choose so many things to do! Some of us love crafts, others love games and some even love to write books! The best part is that every Friday we can choose something different from the last! This gives us a chance to play with all different friends. We love Fridays!!
What do you notice about the sky? Here are some of us observing the day sky. We are learning about weather and the different things we can see in the sky. We've learned that there are some times you can see the moon in the sky during the day. We will be coming home with our moon journals soon! We are excited to do some night time moon observing!
In science we are studying air and what air does. We have become engineers and created parachutes. We were able to learn that air helps parachutes make it safely and slowly to the ground. We need parachutes to get things out of high places, like a plane! Here we are flying our parachutes.
